Due to the disruptions of the Covid-19 pandemic and after 6 long years, we finally announce that the 5th international workshop on rotavirus and norovirus in China will be held in Shanghai from May 8th to 10th, 2024, and be hosted by Fudan University and China CDC, with technical support from US CDC.
Before 1990s, rotavirus was not a known cause of acute gastroenteritis in young children and was not recognized as a public health problem in China. China CDC, with the support of US CDC, PATH, a USA-based global health non-profit organization, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and WHO, established a sentinel surveillance network in China. This network was a founding member of the Asian Rotavirus Surveillance Network, a group of 9 countries involved in a standardized hospital-based surveillance of rotavirus and the molecular characterization of rotavirus strains. This was a milestone event in rotavirus research in China, which promoted the epidemiology, virology, and vaccine research of rotavirus in China.
