Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University (SMCFU) was founded in 1927 as the National No.4 Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine, the first-ever national university medical school founded by Chinese people. Dr. Yan Fuqing was the first Dean. In 1932, the institution gained independence under the name of National Shanghai Medical College. Its motto is “An Ultimate Dedication to Righteousness and Professionalism above Personal Gains and Interests”, which was borrowed fromThe History of the Han Dynasty: Biography of Dong Zhongshu (《汉书·董仲舒传》), which states that the benevolent dedicate themselves to righteousness and justice instead of chasing personal gains. It was renamed as Shanghai No.1 Medical College and Shanghai Medical University in 1952 and 1985 respectively. In 2000, it was merged with Fudan University.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (or the China CDC) is a national-level technical organization under the National Health Commission that specializes in disease control and prevention and public health.
The Shanghai Institute of Infectious Disease and Biosecurity (SIIDB) was formally established in November 2020 at Fudan University as a research institute and independent legal entity, receiving full endorsement from both the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and Fudan University.
The Shanghai Municipal People's Government facilitated the institute's registration as an independent legal entity and its recognition as a key scientific research institution in Shanghai, providing extensive support in its establishment and management. Fudan University offers comprehensive support in various areas, including research team development, talent recruitment and cultivation, graduate student enrollment, provision of teaching and research space, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
SIIDB's primary objective is to enhance public health security systems, not only within Shanghai but also across China, while aspiring to become a leading contributor on the international stage in the fields of infectious disease and biosecurity research. With joint support from the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and Fudan University, SIIDB is constructing a comprehensive research sharing platform and high-level biosafety laboratories, while also engaging in the development of research and technologies for major infectious disease prevention and control.
Fudan University has allocated 5,000 square meters of research space to support the Phase I construction of SIIDB, and the newly built Technical Support Platform has been completed and put into operation. This platform houses various research facilities, including the Major Infectious Disease and Pathogenics Research Platform, the Infectious Disease Big Data Prediction and Early Warning Research Center Platform, and the Major Infectious Disease Population Cohort Platform.
SIIDB has consistently emphasized talent cultivation and development while actively promoting the construction of a high-level talent pool. With a flexible approach to hiring research personnel, there are currently over 70 experts in various disciplines such as pathogenics, clinical medicine, pharmacology, vaccines, public health, and big data.
Boasting world-class research facilities, a conducive work environment, and an excellent service support team, SIIDB warmly welcomes outstanding talents from both domestic and international realms to join us in our mission to safeguard public health and biosecurity.
